Why is 377 Farm Located in Grayson County, TX?

377 Farm is located six miles north of Whitesboro, Texas, on State Highway 377. Our family has owned this farm land for over 100 years and is recognized as a recipient of the Texas Family Land Heritage Program by the Texas Department of Agriculture. The Texas Family Land Heritage Program honors farms and ranches that have been in continuous operation by the same family for 100 years or more. In fact, 2021 marks 150 years that this land has been in the family, which means we may qualify to be a recipient for the 150 year recognition! We will apply this year so check back with us for an update on that.

We were surprised to learn this little fact… some acreage of the farm went to building FM 901, which later became State Highway 377. Click here to read a little history about our family farm land, previously called Reast Farm. (Article courtesy of 1996 Family Land Heritage Program, vol. 14).

After discussions, some thought and many Google searches, we decided to continue the family tradition and start a lavender farm. Lavender should grow well on the farm because Whitesboro is in Zone 7 (USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map). We will have the soil tested and make necessary adjustments to ensure we achieve the correct pH requirements for lavender. We have lavender plants we “hope” to plant by mid summertime. However, the truth is, we know nothing about farming and nothing about growing lavender! ‘Learning as we go’ is certainly an understatement.

As we start the process, the first step is to get the land ready for our midsummer planting, and we hope you follow our progress. Any suggestions and advice are welcome!
